Can Stapling Platform Affect GERD Outcomes?
A retrospective study published in Obesity Surgery reports significantly reduced postoperative GERD rates with the Titan SGS™ Stapler compared to multi-fire staplers.¹* The analysis reviewed 257 robotic-assisted sleeve gastrectomies performed by a single surgeon (2016–2023) and evaluated how sleeve shape may influence GERD and other postoperative outcomes.
The Ying et al Study is an observational study. The results are not necessarily definitive.
The Titan SGS™ Stapler is associated with improved 1 Year Post-Operative GERD and other outcomes1

83% Lower Rate of de novo GERD – 1.8% of patients developed GERD one year after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) with the Titan SGS™ Stapler, compared to 10.9% with multi-fire staplers (p = 0.005).

73% Lower Rate of Reported Post-op GERD – At 1-year post-op, 7.1% of Titan SGS™ Stapler patients had GERD versus 26.4% in the multi-fire stapler group (p = 0.002).

129% Improvement in GERD Resolution – Among patients with preoperative GERD, 25% saw resolution 1 year after surgery with the Titan SGS™ Stapler versus 10.9% with multi-fire staplers (p = 0.005).

8.4 times More Likely to Remain GERD-free – Multivariable analysis showed that patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with the Titan SGS™ Stapler were 8 times more likely to avoid GERD 1 year post-surgery (OR: 8.4; 95% CI: 2.8–32.5).

Shorter Length of Stay (LOS) – The average LOS was 2.0 days with the Titan SGS™ Stapler versus 2.2 days with multi-fire staplers (2.0 ± 0.03 days vs. 2.2 ± 0.04 days, p = 0.04).

Zero Readmissions – No patients in the Titan SGS™ Stapler cohort were readmitted within 30 days after surgery compared to 8 (4%) in the multi-fire cohort.

Zero Post-op Complications –No leaks, reoperations, or infections were reported in either group.
